Livingston Thompson - Ffestiniog Railway
Livingston Thompson - Double Fairlie locomotive model
Completed in 1886 the 'Livingston Thompson' looked like two locomotives back-to-back but was in fact one long rigid boiler with central fireboxes and driving position. Each end of the boiler was mounted on a swivelling powered bogie.
About the Ffestiniog Railway
The Ffestiniog Railway, the oldest railway company in the world, opened in 1836 to carry states from the rapidly expanding mines at Blaenau Ffestiniog to the newly built harbour at Porthmadog, from where the slate was exported all over the world. In its heyday, the Ffestiniog Railway carried 130,000 tons of slate a year but after the decline in the slate industry the Railway eventually closed in 1946.
Following restoration and reopening the Ffestiniog Railway is now the longest and busiest of the "Great Little Trains of Wales", enjoyed by many thousands of visitors every year.
